Black Dog launches a range of protective parts for the BMW R1250GSA

Known around the world for their heavy-duty, American-made skid plates, Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW), owned by adventure enthusiasts Kurt and Martha Forget, is constantly adding new products to its line of bike armor. ADV bike. And accessories. Today we’re looking at a new line of products designed specifically to protect the vulnerable cylinders and valve covers of BMW’s top-of-the-range R1250GSA.

Crash Bar Reinforcement System

Anyone who rides off-road knows that investing in crash protection for your expensive adventure bike is cheap insurance. Most start with an engine protection bar set, usually a product offered by the motorcycle manufacturer. And that’s great, but not foolproof, especially when you’re talking about BMW’s flagship GSA and those protruding cylinder heads. Enter BDCW with its Crash Bar Reinforcement System, a set of custom-machined, triangulated steel struts that attach to the frame using the engine’s thru-bolt to optimize stability. The bars act as reinforcement to hold the OE crash bar system accountable, even during severe impacts. The crash bar reinforcement system retails for $259 and works for both the earlier R1250GSA and R1200GSA models.

Cylinder head guards

For the ultimate in cylinder head protection for the R1250GSA, BDCW has created Literal Shields for the bike’s super vulnerable magnesium rocker covers. Because there is no experienced GS rider who hasn’t scratched, cracked or witnessed a damaged valve cover resulting from an off-road spill. All it takes is a sharp rock to hit between the crash bars and you hit the JB weld. Black Dog gives you the option to completely protect those exposed covers behind 1/4 inch 5052 aluminum plates. Machined slots accommodate countersunk bolts that attach to the stock crash bars for a smooth, sliding finish. Available in “Silver Vein” or “Black Hammertone,” these new cylinder guards, which are only compatible with 2019 and newer GSA models, are sold in pairs for an introductory price of $159.

Radiator guards

There’s no doubt that radiator protection is essential for serious off-road adventures, but it’s the bike armor that’s most often overlooked, in part due to the trade-off in cooling airflow. . While Black Dog has been making radiator guards for a while, this new design was created to maximize airflow without skimping on protection. The two aluminum plates feature “louvers” with each slat bent forward to deflect rocks and debris to the ground. Black Dog says these guards are easy to install and don’t require removing the existing plastic radiator shroud. Powered coated in a black finish, a pair of BDCW radiator guards for your current R1250GSA model costs $159.

The plan is currently offered for $920, which will save you 10% ($120).
