The Sportster S’s 1250cc V-Twin engine has been tuned to produce more torque and provide more low and midrange growl

The Sportster brand is an iconic line of cruisers in the Harley Davidson portfolio that has been in continuous production since 1957. Harley Davidson unveiled its latest custom sports bike named Sportster S earlier this year.

Now it is preparing for launch in India. Today, Harley Davidson India revealed that the bike will be launched during India Bike Week 2021, which is scheduled to take place near Lonavala in Maharashtra from December 4-5, 2021.

Harley Davidson 2021 Sportster S – Custom Design

The final production Sportster S model made its first appearance as a Custom concept almost four years ago and still remains very similar. The production-spec Sportster S silhouette is retained with rugged twin-can exhausts, bulky tires and a one-piece seat.

The bike has a large skid plate underneath and a nice flat line from tank to seat while the massive front tire and short fender give it a classic bobber look. Up front, the Sportster S sports a capsule-shaped headlight that looks a bit odd. Other styling cues such as the flat rear part, with a hood, one-piece saddle and gold-colored exhaust mufflers upwards are inspired by the Harley Davidson XR750 flat tracker.

The powertrain is highlighted by the use of a Chocolate Satin finish on the magnesium engine cowls. The cruiser will be offered in three colors, namely Stone Washed White Pearl, Midnight Crimson and Vivid Black. Overall, the cruiser has been designed in a way that makes it look like a bespoke bike.

Hardware Configurations

Harley Davidson has also updated the chassis of the new Sportster S where the engine now acts as a stressor. This is done to reduce the weight of the bike. In addition, the use of lightweight materials has made it possible to obtain an optimal weight / power ratio. The company also claims that a more rigid frame improved the handling of the bike. The tubular steel frame is suspended from a 43mm Showa inverted fork up front and a SHOWA Piggyback monoshock at the rear.

While the front suspension unit is fully adjustable, the rear unit has hydraulic preload adjustment. The bike rides on 17-inch front and 16-inch lightweight cast aluminum rear wheels with an offset five-spoke design. Braking functions are provided by a 320mm disc crushed by a radial monobloc Brembo four-piston caliper at the front and a 260mm disc held by a Brembo two-piston caliper at the rear.

Re-tuned V-Twin engine

The powertrain features a 1250cc Revolution Max 1250T engine at its mechanical heart. This unit is the American bike maker’s latest iteration of a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-Twin engine derived from the Pan America 1250. However, in Sportster S it develops 121 hp and 125 Nm of torque, or 30 horsepower. less than what is offered in its hardcore adventure bike sibling. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip clutch.

While the output is on the lower side, Harley says the engine has been tuned to provide more low end and midrange growl. The engine also delivers 10% more torque between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm. The 1,250cc unit also includes other modern technologies such as VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshafts).

Proposed features

Speaking of tech, the Sportster S is packed with modern electronics, including a 4.0 inch diameter TFT digital console with smartphone connectivity, six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), cornering ABS, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control. and much more. It also offers four driving modes: Road, Sport, Rain and Custom.

Sportster S was offered at a starting price of $ 14,999 (around INR 11.18 lakh). The launch price in India is expected to be in the range of Rs 15-20 lakh.
