Illinois police arrest one of the dumbest bomb threat suspects of all time.
Phone pranks were fun back then
Before cell phones, caller ID and “Crank Yankers”, it was a right of passage for college kids to crack jokes. I remember my friends and I did it all the time. Especially in the summer, on a rainy day, when you were bored.
How would prank calls work
We were getting to kind of a “bit” like, “Is your fridge working, well, you better go catch it.” You know, really corny stuff, nothing offensive or threatening. We would just dial random numbers in our area code and hope someone would answer. Back then, they usually did.
Usually it was harmless enough. The unfortunate victim hung up. If you’re lucky, you might get a laugh from them and maybe a funny response. Of course, there were always those pranksters who went overboard and scared people for no reason.
The prank calls had to stop
Unfortunately, new technologies came into play and the era of prank calls was over. Things like caller ID made it too easy to get caught. Nobody wanted this kind of problem, so we just stopped. Of course, you’re always going to have the dumb criminal who thinks he’s the smartest person in the room, but he gets caught every time.
Busted doing a prank call
“At approximately 6:30 p.m., Sky Zone, 325 W. Lake St., received a voicemail message threatening to bomb and set fire to the building, police said.”
“Using the caller ID information, the officer was able to contact the young suspect by phone.”
“The suspect admitted to making the phone call and leaving the bomb threat as a joke, police said.”
The simplest case ever
I would say it’s safe to think that this was one of the easier cases to solve. The suspect left his phone number on the called ID. That’s how you spell mute. Someone will have to tell them that the era of prank calls is long over.
