The new Sequoia is now made in Texas


Toyota has confirmed that it is now producing the new hybrid version of its Sequoia full-size SUV in Texas. The Sequoia was all-new for 2023 and deserves praise for its hybrid engine and refinement. The new 2023 Sequoia and associated 2023 Tundra truck are Toyota’s biggest vehicles, and Toyota needed a plant the size of Texas to build them.

It’s hard to believe that the Sequoia SUV has remained virtually unchanged for 14 years. The Sequoia is big, and in the previous version it had a thirsty V8, old technology and a dated design. But, when Toyota launched the new Tundra truck for 2022, it gave the brand a chance to redesign the full-size Sequoia and bring it up to date. The Tundra, too, hadn’t been redesigned in a long time and was starting to show its age.

Toyota has invested $391 million to modernize the plant in San Antonio, Texas. In total, the plant has 3,800 employees and 5,200 suppliers on site. The new vehicles have some of the largest sheets of metal the company has ever produced, and special technology was required, including a new laser welding facility. Overall, Toyota says it has invested $3.1 billion in the plant over the past 20 years.

What’s new in the 2023 Sequoia

Often, when a car manufacturer says a vehicle is new, they don’t necessarily mean EVERYTHING. But, the Sequoia has been redesigned from the ground up on the new Tundra platform. It hardly feels like it should carry the same name as the old Sequoia from the inside, and its design looks much more like a newer generation.

The Sequoia is designed to drive like a big luxury SUV, but it retains one key feature that gives it truck-like capabilities: a solid, lockable rear axle. This allows Toyota to add the impressive TRD PRO off-road package and all of its accessories like hill descent control, skid plates, FOX-branded internal bypass shocks and more. V8 engines are great to make great power. Due to the way pistons work, they can produce more power than other engine types. But they are big. They are heavy. And they are thirsty. In Toyota’s case, the 2022 Sequoia V8 made 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque from the 5.7-liter – but got an abysmal 13 mpg in the city.

Toyota’s new 2023 Toyota Sequoia will get a significant power boost thanks to the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. The new V6 totally trumps the V8 with 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, that’s enough power for the new Sequoia to tow nearly a ton more. The new 2024 Toyota Sequoia will tow up to 9,000 pounds. It gets 21 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.

How much should you pay for a 2023 Toyota Sequoia?

The base 2023 Toyota Sequoia three-row starts at $58,300 for the SR5 4×2 package. The Limited starts at $64,700, the Platinum at $70,900 and the Sequoia Capstone at $75,300. Four-wheel drive is a $3,000 option in every model except the TRD PRP 4×4, which only comes with four-wheel drive. Toyota quotes a delivery charge of $1,495. The Sequoia is built on the new toyota tundra chassis, which means it is assembled in San Antonio, Texas.
