This Baja-themed Smart Fortwo is pure thrills

The Smart brand is known worldwide. Originally a German brand, Smart became a joint venture in 2019 when Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group came together to produce Smart-badged cars for the global automotive market.

However, a Smart model that predates this merger is the Smart Fortwo. Introduced in 1998, the Smart Fortwo is a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2-seater hatchback ultramini that is now in its third generation of production.

That said, the Smart Fortwo that had us swoon here is a custom build. That’s the work of California-based Gotham Garage for the Netflix show “Car Masters: Rust to Riches.” On the face of it, there were no limitations or exceptions when it came to construction, with the ForTwo featuring the kind of off-road modifications you’d expect to find in a Jeep Wrangler.

The ForTwo rolls on massive 30-inch tires, which have a wider and taller suspension system than many off-road vehicles. The ForTwo also includes a medium roll cage, front skid plate and a gigantic 4,000-pound winch. Smart also allowed owners to fit a gas canister and a spare wheel, if they preferred.

For when it’s time to take this machine off the beaten path, Smart has made available adjustable spool covers, with custom swingarms and other upgraded features that give it a punch when venturing into more challenging terrain. difficult.

Other features include a roof rack, cool skid plates, masses of LED lights and a bold green exoskeleton. Looking inside the neat two-seater, you’ll find it’s surprisingly bare-bones, with the only modification being a nine-inch touchscreen. The tidy Smart car is incredibly spacious, with its interior simplicity adding to its modern flair.

This Baja-themed Smart Fortwo doesn’t have the speed of Ferrari, but it screams WOW!

Smart equipped the ForTwo with a rear-mounted 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine capable of 70 brake horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. . Top speed is said to be just 65mph – probably due to those massive wheels.

This spectacular build was recently sold via Cars & Bids for $23,000. Although the modified Smart car does not have the speed of a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, it definitely has the wow factor that many modern car enthusiasts are looking for.
